Stags Rugby League club has a rare chance to showcase the world cup. More than 100 kids from the New Lynn community gathered at the club to have a photo taken with the prized trophy.

Communities have come together to see the Rugby League World Cup.

NZRL Community playgroup manager Marissa Holland says, “Today we have got our end of year playgroup’s day, we have invited all our play groups nationwide to come and have a fun day together and it’s also a good chance to see the world cup trophy as well.”

Holland says it’s a unique occasion and a fun day for groups to come together from afar.

“Like I say it’s just a good chance to build a bit of interest and we are looking at families that may normally, may not know anything about rugby league. Just having the families and having the trophy they are that much more excited about the rugby league world up next year.”

The Rugby League World Cup was welcomed by a small group of kōhanga reo kids from Tahuri Mai.

Tahuri Mai Kōhanga Reo teacher Leatiana Shelford says the day’s gathering was a bonus for the kids to learn more about the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

“This is a big and exciting event for us to support. What makes me happy is that the kids kicked off the event.”

Holland says, “It has grown a lot it has been a very busy year for playgroups. The momentum has been growing, it is just getting busy and more clubs are requesting play groups.”

The NZRL Playgroups currently has 15 locations with the aim of growing the initiative next year.
