Kehu Butler from Ngāi Te Rangi and Zhana Hutchieson from Te Atiawa are the Open title winners from the Māori Surfing Nationals held in Waitara.
Waitara hosted the National Māori Surfing Nationals this year, a new place for many of the competitors.
With surfers from all over the country competing in the 10 categories, all eyes were on the finals.
Zhana Hutchieson, from Te Ātiawa, won the Open Women’s section, despite the unfavourable conditions.
In the Open Men’s section, there was a battle between a father and son duo.
Father Khan Butler has been attending the Māori nationals for over two decades.
In the end, the father was beaten by the son. Khan came in at fourth place, his son, Kehu, winning the Overall Open Men’s title.
“Today I‘m feeling really grateful to be holding such an awesome taonga,” says Kehu.
Next year’s Māori Surfing Nationals will be held again in Waitara.
