The New Zealand women’s rugby sevens team has won the opening round of the World Series in Dubai, beating Australia 17-5 in the final.

The Black Ferns Sevens took revenge for their Olympic final defeat, dominating their rivals to score three tries to one in front of a vocal crowd.

NZ Women’s Sevens Captain Sarah Goss says “To come out here in probably one of our favourite tournaments and a crowd like this and to win its pretty awesome so we can give it back to our fans and everyone who keeps supporting us.”

Australia were still very much in the game to the end but tries from Portia Woodman and two from Rebekah Cordero-Tufuga gave the Black Ferns Sevens the gold medal and the Dubai Sevens Cup.

Tyla Nathan-Wong says “Honestly it’s the best feeling. This team is incredible the last two weeks with the girls it’s just been amazing, our new management they have been incredible I’m just so proud to be a part of this team”.

Kelly Brazier was named the player of the final while Michaela Blyde was named player of the tournament.

Michaela Blyde says “I’m speechless, I am so speechless right now, I don’t know what I’m thinking I am just so grateful, I am so honoured, I don’t know what to say, I am so happy”.

The team performed their own haka after receiving their gold medals and tournament trophy.
